Does My Child Need Modeling Experience?

2 min read

No previous modeling experience is required to apply for New York Kids Runway (NYKR). Children ages 3–18 can participate in the audition process whether they are completely new to modeling or have already walked in runway shows.

NYKR believes that confidence, personality, coachability, and enthusiasm are more important than arriving with a professional portfolio or a perfect runway walk.

Is NYKR Suitable for First-Time Models?

Yes. Many children begin their runway journey without any professional experience.

A first-time participant may not yet know how to walk, turn, pose, or present an outfit onstage. These skills can be learned through instruction, practice, rehearsals, and show preparation.

The goal is not simply to find children who already look like professional models. NYKR also looks for children who are willing to learn, try something new, and express their individuality.

What Does NYKR Look for During an Audition?

The audition team may consider:

  • Confidence and personality

  • Ability to listen and follow directions

  • A positive and respectful attitude

  • Natural movement

  • Enthusiasm

  • Stage presence

  • Willingness to learn

  • Ability to work with other children and adults

Children are encouraged to be themselves. They do not need to imitate adult fashion models or perform complicated runway routines.

Does My Child Need Professional Photographs?

Parents should follow the photograph requirements listed on the official registration form. A clear, recent photograph is usually more important than an expensive professional portfolio.

Avoid photographs with heavy filters or editing. The image should allow the team to see the child clearly and naturally.

What Can Children Learn Through the Experience?

Preparing for a runway production can help children develop:

  • Posture and body awareness

  • Runway walking and posing

  • Stage presence

  • Presentation skills

  • Focus and listening

  • Teamwork

  • Comfort in front of an audience

  • Confidence in unfamiliar environments

These skills can be valuable even if a child does not plan to pursue professional modeling.

What If My Child Is Shy?

Shy children can still apply. Some families choose NYKR specifically because they want their child to become more comfortable expressing themselves and being seen.

A child does not need to be the loudest or most outgoing person in the room. Quiet confidence, kindness, focus, and a willingness to participate can also make a strong impression.

Parents should avoid putting pressure on children to perform perfectly. Encouragement and a positive attitude can help children enjoy the experience.
